What is Biokinetics?
Biokinetics is a specialized healthcare profession that focuses on the prescription of exercise programs tailored to individuals at all stages of health — from the general population to those with chronic diseases, injuries, or musculoskeletal conditions.
Whether you’re aiming to enhance fitness, manage a condition, or rehabilitate from an injury, Biokinetics plays a pivotal role in improving physical health and well-being.
Biokinetics is a professional degree and governed by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
Biokineticists are highly trained to assess, design, and implement personalized exercise treatment programmes that help individuals achieve their optimal physical potential, whether through injury rehabilitation, fitness enhancement, or chronic disease management.
A Biokineticist not only addresses existing conditions but also places a strong emphasis on prevention — helping individuals reduce the risk of developing injury, chronic illness, or physical dysfunction.
This is achieved through two core principles:
- Scientific Assessment: Using evidence-based methods, Biokineticists conduct thorough physical assessments to understand an individual’s unique needs and limitations.
- Individualized Rehabilitation: Based on these assessments, a tailored, systematic approach to rehabilitation or fitness is developed to restore, optimize, and maintain physical health.

About Me
I am a qualified Biokineticist with over 20 years of experience in the field. I obtained my Honors degree from the University of the Free State in 2003 and completed my MSc. (Med) in Biokinetics at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2014.
My career includes working at the Institute of Sport Research in Pretoria for 4 years, as well as serving as a lecturer and Head of the Institute of Biokinetics at North-West University (NWU) for 10 years. During my tenure at NWU, I coordinated comprehensive rehabilitation programs across Orthopaedic, Cardiac, and Metabolic clinics, alongside sport-specific rehabilitation and preventative care. I also played a key role in assisting with and constructing rehabilitation clinics for the Rugby Institute of NWU and the Leopards Rugby teams.
With a broad and diverse background in Biokinetics, I have gained extensive experience across a wide range of disciplines and patient needs, enabling me to provide personalized care for each individual.

Biokineticists are an integral part of a collaborative referral network, working alongside Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, and Dietitians to comprehensively address the needs of each patient.
Physiotherapy typically focuses on managing acute pain, swelling, and discomfort, with an emphasis on muscle activation through manual therapy in the early stages of recovery.
Biokinetics, on the other hand, uses physical exercise to enhance strength, improve daily function, and correct muscular imbalances or weaknesses. Biokinetic intervention can begin early in the rehabilitation process once a patient is able to move the affected body part with minimal pain and swelling. Treatment continues until the patient achieves their optimal level of function or their rehabilitation goals are met.
“In my practice, my goal is to add value to each individual I treat by drawing on the experience I’ve gained over many years. I strive to enhance their quality of life, physical capabilities, and performance. My approach is patient-centered, ensuring that each treatment plan is tailored to the unique needs and goals of the person in front of me. I am committed to staying informed by the latest research to guide the prescription of exercise and the design of each session.”
